All in all, iran launched possibly 73-92 AIM-54A phoenix...and 66-71 of those scored.of those almost 90% of the AIM-54 missiles fired were used aganist iraqi fighters and fighter bombers...only about a dozen victories by AIM-54s were against fast, highflying targets such as the MIG-25 and TU-22 Blinder...the successes in aerial combat make the iranian air force most successful user of the F-14A Tomcat during its operational history....the Tomcat pilots were ready to kill iraqi fighters in every place in the iranian Air space...in the Iran-iraq war the IRIAF pilots could show their Talents about the use of the perfect AWG-9 radar and their killer Phoenix...the Tomcats were in long war with the iraqi jets the Top Guns...The US navy warships patroling on the Area recorded several AIM-54 launches....it is probable that 4 iraqi bombers were shot down with an single AIM-54 fired from a Persian cat piloted by major hashemi on 7 Jan 1981 ...they were flying close formation when the cat had the lock-on them
on 2nd december 1980 one of the closest range shootdowns by AIM-54 occured...captain F. Dehghan of 8nd TFS was flying on patrol covering khark island oil Terminal, when number of approaching bogies(MIGs) were detected.lock-on was attained only from a distance of 10 miles, too close to the minimum range of the missile.the F-14A had to use the Phoenix, though,as otherwise the IRIAF persian cat would have been too heavy for dogfighting.the AIM-54 was launched on short-range mode and it managed to hit a MIG-21SM after 9 seconds..the pilot Lt.hassan al-mashoof al-qhtani could not survive the cat's hit.....3 other bogies came back right after the hit....the iranians Tomcat F-14A's were the lion of skies over iranian air space and 250km. from a border inside of iraqi air...they could coverage and intercept every thing with their perfect AWG-9 Radar .....i think the better nickname for F-14A tomcat's was tomlion...cause they were very aggressive with the iraqi Aggressor jets
During late 1987 soviet union supplied iraq with MIG-25BM wild weasel aircraft....the planes tested the ECM systems against iranian Tomcats and attacked iranian targets with new anti-radar weapons...........The MIG-25Ms proved they could operate with impunity at up to 69 000 ft....until on the night of 11th november a MIG-25BM was intercepted by an IRIAF Tomcat F-14A piloted by capt. jalal Zandi from 81 TFS-8-th AFB khatami...the Tomcat fired a single AIM-54 in home-on-mode....the missile guided flawsely but fail to detonate....yet the missile clipped the MIG-25's fin and forced the pilot to bail out....the iraqi pilot was jeneral Omar al-ghoben al-zakariya...he did a safe eject after the cat's hit but in 1991 he was the first kill in the operation Desert Storm....when the US F-15 Eagle intercepted him and shoot him down with an AIM-120A from the range of 23 mile over the Kuwaiti air sapace
